An Individualized Education Plan, IEP, is a specified plan for a student who qualifies for Specialized Academic Instruction (SAI) with 1 of 14 qualifiers as determined by an assessment. The IEP discusses parent concerns, student strengths and preferences, their current educational skills across mutiple skill sets (domains), what the student needs to be learning, how to adjust the school environment to help them succeed and offers of services like Speech, Occupational Therapy or several other services in order to further their skills. A meeting with the parent and school staff is held before it is implemented. It is a free service. A 504 plan discusses the barrier the student is encountering in their learning environment and how to modify the environment to help them succeed in their current placement. A 504 plan doesn't necessarily need a detailed assessment but it does sometimes require staff observations to develop a solid plan. Paraeducators and Instructional Assistants play a crucial role in the classroom. They are tasked with guiding the student through their lessons and helping them navigate the classroom. Teaching the Paras and the IAs how to read the goals in the education plan, where to find information on providers and services and helping them to learn what accommodations need to be implemented ensures the student is optimizing their educational benfit without adding to the teachers plate.

You can ask to continue the meeting to another date and only sign for participation for that specific date. Your questions and concerns can be noted on the meeting notes and the parent concerns section of the education plan. If after the next meeting you still do not agree, you can check the box "sign with exception" and list all the elements of the education plan that you disagree with. If needed, you can use a seperate sheet of paper to complete the task.
